Managing Mastitis and Other Infections with Surgical Options

Mastitis is the painful swelling of the breast that leads to breast infection during breastfeeding. In the U.S., up to 10% of women suffer from mastitis, while 30% of nursing mothers worldwide have it. Mastitis is most prevalent during the first three months of nursing.

An excess of milk, or hyperlactation, is the most frequent cause of mastitis. The milk ducts narrow as a result of this overabundance of milk because the surrounding tissue presses against them. The result of this is an engorged or swollen breast. Infection brought on by inflammatory mastitis is known as bacterial mastitis. An abscess can occasionally result from a bacterial infection.

During breast feeding and pregnancy, infections are often treated with antibiotic therapy. If this fails, incision and drainage may be required. While this offers the quickest recovery, breast feeding may need to be stopped on the involved side to allow the wound to heal. Non-surgical drainage of a breast abscess is usually ineffective.

When an abscess occurs outside of pregnancy, incision and drainage is the most expedient way of curing an abscess if a short course of antibiotics is unsuccessful. This also allows for a biopsy to be obtained to exclude any underlying breast cancer.
